Bellevaux

Bellevaux, from the evocative Latin name “bella vallis” (“beautiful valley”) closes off the Brevon Valley under the protective watch of Roc d’Enfer (“Hell Rock”, alt. 2,244m).
Because of its many unusual natural features, it attracted two religious orders in the 12th century – the Carthusians and the Benedictines. These communities laid the foundations of village life today.Located 30 minutes from the Lake of Geneva and 45 minutes from Geneva itself, Bellevaux offers a wide range of activities for individuals or families, in a truly rural setting with unspoilt traditions.

Sightseeing – tips and ideas

In 1943, a natural disaster formed the Vallon Lake, providing Bellevaux with one of the most dazzling gems in its necklet of greenery.
This location, which also includes St. Bruno’s Chapel, is a reminder of the Carthusians’ presence here for almost 400 years. Slightly higher up, the Diomax Waterfall thunders and foams in the “Carthusians’ stockpots” (marmites des Chartreux). It will show you the mysterious “Carthusians’ Cross”.
This is just one example of the natural and cultural heritage awaiting you along the “Eau vive, Qui vive ?” sightseeing and interpretive trail set up for visitors by the locals!
